Guide to Mens White Tie Attire
Do you think that a Black Tie dress code is most formal? Well, truth is that black tie is casual when compared to a traditional White Tie ensemble. White tie is the most formal of all dress codes, and although much less common than it ones used to be, is still worn at high society galas, Royal affairs, and some presidential dinners. Should you be so lucky to attend such an event then make sure to follow the strict white tie dress code. Our guide below will ensure a perfect ensemble.
The Tailcoat
Just like the tux is the choice of for classic black tie, the tailcoat is the mandatory jacket style ffor a white tie dress code. Proper tailoring is important! The tailcoat should fit snug, be long enough in the front to cover the waistcoat but should also not extend over the pant seam, and the tails should fall just below the knees. Black is the preferred color, lapels are typically peaked and faced in satin or grosgrain, and the cut can be single or double breasted.
Waistcoat & Formal Dress Shirt
The classic formal white tie waistcoat is white in color and most of the time made from pique fabric. The formal waistcoat also has square or shawl lapels that are not detached from the collar. Both single and double breasted waistcoats are popular. Most classic waistcoats also have two symmetrically aligned welt pockets used to hold a pocket watch. The dress shirt for white tie attire has a wing-tip collar, French cuffs, and a plain front with buttons hidden under a placket or closed with decorative studs that match the pair of cuff links.
The White Bow Tie
As you might make out from the name “white tie”, the classic bow tie is white in color. Only the self-tied bow is acceptable. Should you opt for a pique fabric waistcoat then the bow tie should be made from matching textile. Butterfly bows are most popular but pointed ends are just as acceptable.
Overcoats & Top Hat
In colder weather an overcoat is needed. Typically men wear a Chesterfield overcoat in color that matches the tailcoat. Top hats are also a popular accessory. Both, the classic fixed shape top hat or the collapsible opera style top hat are popular.
