The Simple Scoop on Socks and Trousers
For the record, this post was inspired by this morning’s commute and the dismal looking socks that seemed to overrun this town this morning. Normally, I’m not an active purveyor of socks, but seasonal Christmas socks worn with a brown suit on August thirty first to the office? Could this be the sweet and sour result of dirty laundry or a lost bet or a dirty prank? Even with the benefit of doubt, we noticed a lot of poor decisions in the sock department. Seasonally themed socks should be worn on the appropriate month. Christmas themed socks should fly in December and Halloween socks should fly in October. It’s as simple as that.
Then there’s the ever present conundrum of white cotton athletic socks. They sell them in bulk and everyone has an abundance of athletic socks but that still doesn’t make them suitable to wear with suits or trousers. Athletic socks belong with athletic shoes and nothing else. It’s as simple as that. That’s our mantra with the trouser and sock conundrum.
Trousers and suits should be paired with fine wool or thin cotton dress socks. Dress socks should either match your trousers, your shoes, or be a complimentary contrast to the rest of your ensemble. Matching your socks to your trousers will make your legs look longer whereas matching your socks to your shoes will be more subtle and less noticeable. It is also a nice effect to wear pleasantly contrasting colors. For example, you could wear a pair of blue and green argyle socks with a navy suit and tan oxfords.
The most important thing with pairing trousers and socks is that they are dress socks that are thin and coordinate well with the other elements of your attire. Save the holiday socks for holiday parties and the gym socks for the gym.
