Three Style Rebel Tricks any Man Should Know About

Looking for new ways to add contrast to your wardrobe? Then here are three “rebel style tips” that will break the norm and transform your look from conventional to fashion forward.

High-Low Mixing
Men’s fashion places everything into very definite categories: formal, casual, high-end, and so on. While many guys are taught to dress with pieces coming from the same box, picking from different categories as you go along can yield great results as well.

There’s a lot of extra potential in your closet when you learn to mix dressy and casual. Pair your shorts with a crisp button-down and sport coat, and throw in a modern necktie or (even more dapper) bow tie for good measure. The decidedly dressed down graphic tee gets new attitude when you layer a sophisticated blazer over it, and add dark wash jeans. Your collegiate jacket, meanwhile, can revitalize your daily shirt-and-tie work ensemble.

It takes practice to pull off the high-low mix and satisfy dress codes, so it’s best to start slow if you’re sartorially new. Take one of your usual outfits (such as the necktie and sport coat above), and then replace just one item in the set (say, shorts instead of khaki pants). It takes your casual attire to a whole new level.

The Clash
Most men have a simple philosophy for color mixing: have at most one bright color in any outfit. Bright and bold neckties are such popular items exactly because they’re such easy and fuss-free additions to any weekday ensemble. There is, however, more to this.

Get out a color wheel and try combining colors that are either beside (analogous) or on the opposite ends with (complementary) each other. This gives you the opportunity to have more than one bright color in any outfit, and to maximize the vibrant attitude to fashion that only comes with spring. You can practice with combos like an orange tie with a yellow shirt, or a violet belt with blue chinos.

The secret to make clashing colors work is to keep one in a subdued shade, and let the other one dominate. That way, they don’t clash as much and you keep a sense of balance.

Establish a Pattern
Men’s fashion is awash with great patterns, yet so many guys today are intimidated by wearing anything more complex than a stripe. This makes the patterned area of the wardrobe easy pickings for any guy brave enough to experiment with his style.

The most common practice is to limit the use of patterns to just one item, like a check tie or a striped shirt. You can take a real fashion risk by having a pattern on some major item like a pair of madras shorts, or a plaid sport coat. Multiple prints, such as in pattern-on-pattern tie-and-shirt mixing, is also a very sartorial idea. For the latter, the secret is to establish two different scales – a regular one and a significantly smaller one – to keep both visible yet distinguishable. You don’t want them blending into each other.

Balance, however, should never be foregone. If you’re pulling out any one of these bold pattern tricks, keep the rest of your outfit classic and subdued. That way, you get to highlight – and complement – whatever style risk you’re taking for the day.

Top Mens Fashion Trends of 2011

2011 was one of the most interesting years in recent history for men’s fashion. A great deal of fashion trends made appearances this year; some new, some familiar looks from the past. While some of the fashion trends of 2011 were surely forgettable, many made waves throughout the industry and are poised to influence men’s fashion in 2012. The following are five of the top men’s fashion trends of 2011, all of which caused more than just a few heads to turn.

Denim Overload
Everyone can benefit from having a good selection of denim in their wardrobe, but 2011 took things to another level. Doubling down with denim can be risky, but also extremely attractive when pulled off effectively. Light denim jeans paired with a dark-washed denim jacket was the look in 2011 for a great deal of people, and isn’t looking to go away just about yet.

90s Throwback
Anyone who grew up in the 90s remembers just how distinctive men’s fashion was during this era. Snapbacks, faded t-shirts and grungy jeans practically defined the 90s for a lot of people, and the look is currently experiencing a slight resurgence in the fashion industry. 90s throwback fashion has come back every once in a while for short periods of time, but not with the fervor it has enjoyed in 2011.

Suspenders
A lot of men are quick to mock suspenders for being dorky and overstated, but this isn’t to say that suspenders don’t have a place in fashion. Actually, suspenders can look great on certain people; especially those who dress in a classic manner. While the prospective popularity of suspenders is debatable, they certainly found their niche in 2011, and still remain popular in many circles.

Beards
Say what you will about beards, but one thing is for sure; they were huge in 2011. It seems like just about everyone gave growing a beard a shot this year, many of whom found a new and exciting look for themselves. While beards certainly aren’t for everyone, they’ve enjoyed quite a rush of popularity as of late, serving as one of the biggest trends in 2011 men’s fashion. Beards seemed to be especially popular with younger generations (college students, for example) in 2011, and are somewhat representative of the modern youth culture. Bearing all of this in mind, it looks like 2012 is likely to see just as many beards as 2011.

Cabbie Caps
Hat styles go in and out of fashion quite regularly; most people can agree that this is a fact. One style that has gained quite a bit of attention recently is the cabbie cap. Cabbie caps are understated, sophisticated and attractive when worn by the right person, and are popping up everywhere; especially with the colder weather setting in. While the popularity of cabbie caps is likely to spill over into 2012, it’s tough to predict just how long these will remain top of mind in the fashion community. That said, there’s never been a better time than now to incorporate a cabbie cap into your wardrobe.

Hats Alive: Tips to Find Your Perfect Hat

Hats are enjoying resurgence like never before. In the well-chapeaued days of yore, no self-respecting gentleman would dare walk out the door without first donning the hat a la mode. From the flat topped straw boater hat popular during the early 20th century, to the porkpie which enjoyed its heyday in the 1930s but was recently made famous on the hit TV series Breaking Bad, hats have evolved over time and place to the extent that, should we so desire, we now have hundreds of choices with which to top off a look of any kind.

Donning a hat is perhaps the easiest way to freshen up your style without rapidly diminishing your paycheck. Want to exude an air of sultry film noir? Choose a mysterious fedora, Prefer to channel the look of a Ralph Lauren advertisement? A tweed scally cap, aka driving cap is sure to do the trick.

How to choose your perfect hat:
There’s a hat out there for everybody, but hats, just like any other item of clothing must be chosen carefully to ensure the best fit. Like anything else, style, color and fabric are key factors when deciding what type of hat to add to your wardrobe’s repertoire.

One evergreen choice is the fedora. While fedoras can easily adapt to any clime (straw for warm weather, wool for cool), blokes living in frigid temps may need to use special consideration chapeau-wise. Take a cue from the British Isles where tradition rules and the gents have worn scally caps for centuries. These hats, many times created from leather or wool, are timeless and versatile; playing a round of golf at St. Andrews? Perfect! Taking the dogs for an afternoon stroll in the hills? Still perfect! One can never own too many hats, so plan ahead by purchasing several in different fabrics and colors.

As a rule of thumb, hats comprised of thicker material and thus more rigid are the best choice as a hat should always retain its shape. Floppy, lightweight hats do have their place, but generally that place is on a fishing boat and should thus be avoided if you’re a landlubber. Colorful tartan, muted brown, classic black…hats can be found in a myriad of colors. Stick to gray, brown and black for a traditional look, or go flamboyant with a topper in the green or red family. The bottom line? (Or shall we say the top line?) If you’ve woken up and it’s simply one of those days, the small act of adding a hat to your look will serve to pull together an otherwise ungainly outfit.

A word about baseball caps. So you’re heading to the big game and you’re keen to show some team spirit. Of course the simplest way to do so is to don your team’s logo on a classic cap. This is all well and good, but please fellas, a word of caution. Make sure your hat actually fits your head. Please don’t be that person who walks around with their head tilted back because the brim is pulled unnecessarily low. T.T.F.N.!

Basics in Men’s Fashion: Three Things Any Man Should Know

Just about every guy who has an interest in fashion can pinpoint the time of his life when he first started caring about the clothes they put on each morning. While getting into fashion can be an enjoyable process, it almost always involves making a great deal of mistakes before figuring out your own individual style. Some of the biggest fashion mistakes made by “newbies” are actually easily avoidable – so long as you know how to spot them up front and nip them in the butt. The following are three tips that can make settling into the world of men’s fashion a little easier for those who are new to the game.

1. Focus on Your Shoes
A lot of guys don’t pay very much attention to the shoes they throw on their feet until they have to. After all, sneakers aren’t exactly suitable for wearing to the office, nor are they even ideal for most casual situations once you start caring about fashion. Ideally, the shoes you wear should be made out of leather, as leather shapes to the foot far more easily than canvas and other materials. Strive to have at least one pair each of Oxfords, loafers, and chukkas; all of which are extremely versatile and can be worn with a variety of different types of ensembles. A word of advice; always take to time to keep your shoes clean and well-maintained, as people definitely notice these things more than most people think.

2. Understand Dress Shirts
Dress shirts are terribly misunderstood by those who are new to fashion. Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that you should avoid wearing sleeves that are either too short or too long; both will cause a fashion disconnect. You should also avoid unbuttoning your collar if you plan on wearing a tie, which can look entirely too sloppy. If you aren’t wearing a tie, feel free to always unbutton the top button, and even the second if you feel so inclined (leave it at that; the third button should stay as is). If you work in an office or have to dress professionally each day, you’ll want to have at least five crisp dress shirts. Patterns such as stripes and checkers are fine, although it’s best to stick with shirts that take a neutral slant, which are always easier to pair than those which have bold colors on them. Last but not least, choose shirts that are tailored to flatter your body type. Thin and athletic men will do best with tapered (aka slim fit) shirts while the big and tall man would do much better with a straight cut shirt.

3. Buy the Right Pants
If you want to complete a quality business-casual ensemble, you’ve got the understand how to buy the right pants. Stick with pants that feature no, or at the most one single pleat. While cuffs can look great on some guys, younger men typically do best wearing pants that don’t feature them. In terms of length, the pants you buy should come close to touching the ground when you aren’t wearing shoes. Color and style both can impact the way you look dramatically; grey trousers or khaki chinos are ideal for those who work in an office, or simply want to look their best when they leave the house. Strive to own at least five pairs of dressy pants; preferably more if you can afford them. One final tip: Alternate pants and hang them up after each wearing to let the fabric “breathe” and for wrinkles to disappear.

Five of the All Time Greatest Men’s Fashion Designers

The world of men’s fashion would be nowhere near the same if it weren’t for a handful of well-known designers. In modern fashion, designers truly come and go, however some leave far more lasting impressions than others. The best designers are those whose work is still relevant in today’s world; people who have truly changed the way we think of men’s fashion. Without these individuals, men’s fashion would be nowhere near what it has become today. The following are five of the top menswear designers of all time, each of whom has left an unmistakable mark on men’s fashion.

Calvin Klein
It’s difficult to think of any designer that has had a larger impact on the world of men’s denim than Calvin Klein. Calvin Klein jeans are the epitome of quality, and are a true status symbol.
Ralph Lauren
Ralph Lauren first started gaining a significant following with is exceptionally wide ties, which caught the attention of a great deal of men throughout the world. Known best for his signature Polo shirts, Lauren enjoys some of the best name recognition in men’s fashion.

Giorgio Armani’s name is synonymous with high-quality mens’ suits. An Italian designer with an extremely unique vision, Armani changed the landscape of high-end men’s suits, especially after Richard Gere started wearing them in public. These days, an Armani suit is a status symbol as much as anything else, and is quite indicative of wealth and good taste in fashion.

Marc Jacobs
One of the more recent designers of menswear, Marc Jacobs raises the bar on men’s fashion and has truly changed everything about how people view the industry in modern times. Known for his exceptional eye for unique, yet subtle designs, Jacobs’ Polo-style shirts are especially sought-after by many men.
Tommy Hilfiger
As with some of the other designers on this list, Tommy Hilfiger is a household name at this point in his career. With a great deal of different product lines, Hilfiger’s designs focus on a stepped-up take on casual attire, and are perfect for the modern man.

Dress to Impress @ Post Work Happy Hour

A lot of people look forward to happy hour all throughout the day. This is especially true for those who work office jobs, as there’s nothing better than getting out of work and settling in for drinks and conversation with friends. It’s not uncommon for many people to go straight to happy hour from work, neglecting the chance to go home and change first. The fact is, it’s essential that you look your best at happy hour, as you never know who you might end up meeting or chatting with. For most people, this means taking the time to change before you go out, which you can do either at the office or by popping back home quickly. So long as you consider the following, you’ll have little to no trouble looking your best for happy hour.

Don’t Take “Casual” Too Far
Everyone knows that happy hour should be a casual, enjoyable time. That said, it’s not uncommon for some people to take this a bit far, opting to wear clothing that simply isn’t suited for this occasion. While you might think you can get away with a t-shirt and sneakers at happy hour, the fact is that you’ll look terribly out of place if you take this route. You don’t need to throw on a suit by any means, but chances are that if you wouldn’t go out to dinner in the attire that you choose to throw on, it simply isn’t right for happy hour. You can get a lot of mileage out of paying attention to what other people tend to wear to happy hour, which will give you somewhat of a barometer to follow.

Throw on a Tie
Getting prepared for happy hour is all about proving that you’re a professional and know how to dress like one. As a result, you simply have to throw on a tie when going to happy hour. A tie can make a great deal of difference in terms of your overall appearance, and connotes confidence and professionalism in ways that no other accessory can. When choosing a tie for happy hour, go with one that is relatively casual; fun prints are acceptable, and can actually draw attention to you in an effective manner. Finally, don’t be afraid to loosen your tie for a more casual appearance, which will make it quite clear that you don’t take yourself too seriously.

Keep Things Sparse
There’s no need to double-down on accessories when dressing for happy hour. In fact, you’ll only be drawing unnecessary attention to yourself by doing so. Rather, you should try to keep things as sparse as possible. Khakis, a light-blue dress shirt and brown boat shoes can make for an extremely attractive, yet subtle ensemble that is perfect for wearing to happy hour. If you throw on a great deal of different accessories just to gain attention, you’re more likely to look as if you’re trying too hard than anything else. Stick to the tie, and perhaps a low-key belt for best effect.

The Stylish Gentleman Wears Shorts

Shorts are often seen as age-restricted items – clothes that no self-respecting man over 24 should wear. Truth be told, the age limit only applies to certain styles of shorts. There are categories perfectly appropriate to be worn by guys on both sides of the 20-year old line. Wearing shorts, then, is more a matter of choosing the right kind than being the right age.

Buying Them
It can’t be said enough: even a gentleman can wear shorts – of the right style, that is. Whether it’s with a t-shirt and flip-flops, or a necktie and fedora, shorts can work with a very wide range of aesthetics and fashions for men.

Pick your shorts like you would your pants: simple and trim. It’s the combination of those two factors that will maintain the taste and sophistication of your outfit. As with pants, the extra pockets and details are unnecessary. Sticking to the same color palette that you have for your pants is smart because it keeps the rest of your wardrobe – your neckties, shirts and jackets – compatible with the shorts. That means more options in the morning.

How much should you expect to pay? The answer is the same as that for neckties: you get what you pay for. Sure, there will always be something available in the $10 bin. If you’re looking for something that looks good and lasts even longer, though, expect to pay at least around $50 for a good chino pair of chino shorts.

Wearing Them
Once you have a pair (or ten) of the right style, you also have to learn how to wear the shorts right. If you’re like most fashion-average men, you’ve been either wearing the shorts wrong, or not been wearing them entirely.

A t-shirt is a no-fail match for a pair of shorts, except when you need to make a dressier impression. One option is to wear leather loafers and top off your look with a blazer for a put-together yet summer-friendly vibe. Another is to swap the tee for a button-down and (if it’s a long-sleeve style) roll up the sleeves to accommodate the heat. A fun necktie or bow tie is an optional addition, but highly encouraged if a jacket or cardigan is involved.

The best shoes to pair with a shorts look are either light-and-preppy (like a plimsoll or a desert boot), or chunky but sleek (like those classic sneakers from sporty brands). You don’t want anything too heavy or imposing; that goes against the whole spring vibe.

Owning Them
Regular shorts (of the right design) have style appeal; there’s a whole other level of the garment that has fashion personality. Once you’ve mastered how to wear shorts with your daily tees-or-necktie wardrobe, it’s time to claim a shorts statement of your own.

Patterns are a great statement to make with shorts, mostly because the skin exposure will keep the print from getting overwhelming. Paired with simple layers and accessories, this kind of short has a very strong Rhode Island air. Stripes and checks (and just about any pattern you’d wear on a necktie), though, are less audacious options if you’re shy. For the truly adventurous, though, you should definitely attempt quirkier prints like the animal-themed details of J. Crew and Ralph Lauren.

Whether you prefer neckties or v-necks, shorts should remain in every man’s fashion vocabulary. Once you figure out how to pick the fit that works best with your body, you’d be surprised at how indispensable shorts are to your daily wardrobe.

Facial Hair for Every Style

Sure, your shirt, tie, shoes, pants and even your glasses contribute to the package that is your overall look, but let’s face it − probably the most noticeable aspect of your appearance is your choice of facial hair (or the absence thereof). These days, being clean shaven is anything but de rigueur, and men of all ages and style backgrounds are choosing a more rugged, scruffy look than sporting a squeaky clean face.

Gone are the days when sprouting an unkempt beard left you looking like a vagabond, or if traveling farther back in time, the days when having a beard was a symbol of status or power. In the Western world at least, growing out one’s facial hair is now simply a choice a man makes based purely on his ideas of attaining an attractive appearance. Thus, to shave or not to shave, that is the question. And if the mercurial elite of Hollywood have anything to say about it, beards are a man’s of-the-moment accessory. Even baby faces such as Jake Gyllenhaal or Ashton Kutcher, two celebs who have been snapped recently sporting frowzy stubble, take on a mysterious and strapping air when facial hair is involved.

You’re probably thinking of course, those guys can pull it off because they’re celebrities. But I have a real job. Can this look really work for a nine to five life? Of course! Don’t be daft, just follow these simple steps and you’ll be rockin’ a bearded look in no time.

Keep it neat. The reason some employers abhor facial hair is that it can have a tendency to appear unkempt. A beard can easily appear out of control if not tidily trimmed, so invest in a good pair of clippers and be sure to use them…often.

Mind the ‘do. Your chances of looking less like a character on Ax Men and more like a white collar professional will greatly increase if you keep the hair on your head cut short and well styled. Messy or long hair, especially combined with a beard can look cool, but simply may not be the best choice when vying for power in the boardroom.

Dress to impress. Keep your clothing choices tailored and well-pressed. You want your facial hair to look like a style conscious decision; not like you simply hit snooze one too many times and you couldn’t be bothered to make time for a shave. Keep your ensemble streamlined and you’ll maintain a sharp exterior no matter what your facial hair status.
If your company simply doesn’t allow the stubbly faced look, wait until you have at least three to five days of vacation time, forgo the razor and have a little patience. By the time you return to the office, chances are high that your growth will be long enough to be considered respectable by your employers.

So check your razor at the door, welcome that five o clock shadow and take your cue from Ben Affleck’s new stubble, because these days, it’s all about the scruff.

Classy Cool with Men’s Suits

Men’s formal fashion relies on staple classics, and few pieces are as staple and as classic as the suit. Along with the necktie, shirt and leather shoes, the set usually represents the typical guy’s first attempt at dressy style. That doesn’t go to say, however, that you have to 100% stick to a heritage that can seem too fusty at times. Here are a few tricks to give levity – and character – to the good ol’ suit.

See the Light
For most guys, the suit is something that comes in black, navy or gray. Those three will always hold an honored place in every tailor’s heart, but there are more colors in the suiting palette that are more than worth trying.

Khaki is another one of those classic colors in the men’s wardrobe, yet is rarely used in men’s fashion. A khaki suit gives you two advantages. First, it quickly sets your suit above from the rest of the gray- and black-toting masses. At the same time, the spring-ready color can work with a wide variety of shirt and necktie colors, from deep black to neon green. It’s the perfect wardrobe addition that’s sure to really mix up your rotation.

White suits are an even bigger style risk, but hold great rewards for whoever dares to pull them off. The trick is to not get gleaming white, but instead get bone, ivory or another off white that pair easier with the average guy’s wardrobe.

Personality Patterns
Nothing expresses vibrancy and personality like a good pattern, which is something you can channel even when wearing a suit and necktie. One pattern is a good style strategy; mixing multiple patterns is an even better approach to a more interesting wardrobe.

Check and plaid suits are much classier than you might think, and are carried by a large number of the biggest style retailers. Go subtle if you’re not comfortable with this scale of pattern just yet; shadow plaid is a perfect first-timer option because it’s just noticeable without being overly conspicuous. They also work as a great stand-in for any black or navy suit that you might already own at the moment.

Don’t let your shirt or necktie miss out on any of the action. Unless you’re wearing some really bold pattern (in which case you should seriously consider going all-solid for the rest of the ensemble), try mixing a patterned tie with a patterned shirt. Even in an already patterned suit, getting the right match of print scales can result in something very sharp.

Try Texture
Men’s fashion tends to pay a lot of attention to materials, but not nearly enough mind to the texture of different fabrics. Texture is a really useful thing to have in your repertoire of style because it adds a sartorially dressed down option to just about any outfit you own. Suede and nubuck, in particular, are a favorite of the creative industry because they’re classic, preppy and dressy without being fussy.

Other textured items like a knit tie and chambray shirt only add to the tactical appeal of your ensemble. If you saw a garment in the store and wanted to touch it immediately, chances are good that people will have a similar mindset when they see it on you. This breed of outfits isn’t exactly board meeting-quality material, but it’s an understated way to stand out among the other less fashion-minded guys at work.

While typically associated with semi-formal and business-casual attire, the blazer is becoming more and more casual in modern-day men’s fashion. One of the most common ways to incorporate a blazer into a casual ensemble is by wearing it with a t-shirt. Just look at Hollywood and the celebrity sphere, and you’ll see the likes of Emile Hersch, Chace Crawford and Simon Pegg rocking this trend on a regular basis. While it is certainly possible to go wrong with the blazer/t-shirt combination, those who put the right time and effort into choosing the perfect ensemble can make this look work quite well for them, especially by taking the following tips into consideration.

Choosing the Perfect Blazer
If you intend to wear a blazer over a t-shirt, you’ve got to put a bit of thought into the shopping process. Look for blazers that feature two or three buttons (preferably two), leaving the bottom button loose when you try it on. In terms of color, you’ll do best with navy blue, which can be paired with a great deal of different colors without clashing. Looking for something a bit more unusual and trendy? Then look for tweed blazers at your local thrift shop! Chances are good that you will be able to find a nice tweed jacket for under $50.

Single-vented blazers are casual and sophisticated all at once, which makes them perfect for this application. Perhaps most importantly is to ensure that the blazer you choose fits your shape correctly; it should be relaxed without being baggy, yet should never be overly tight to the point where it hugs your body in an unattractive and uncomfortable manner.

Choosing the Perfect T-Shirt
There are a variety of options at your disposal when choosing a t-shirt for wearing under a blazer. If you’re trying to make a statement, you’ll most likely be drawn towards choosing a graphic tee. Avoid those with too much text, as it’ll likely get drowned-out under the blazer; strive instead for graphic tees with large images on them. If you’d like to take the more sophisticated and classy route, you’ll want to avoid graphic tees altogether and instead go with plain/textured tees. White t-shirts can certainly be effective, and even gray tees with horizontal stripes can usually work in this application. The bottom line is to use your judgement when trying to pair a t-shirt with a blazer; if the combination looks “off,” it likely is.

Stick to Jeans
A lot of people find pants to be the hardest part when embracing the blazer and t-shirt trend. The fact is, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better option than dark-washed designer jeans, which can play off of a navy blue blazer exceptionally well. Choose those which are fitted, yet avoid skinny jeans; the combination often causes a disconnect. Also, watch the length; if the jeans are baggy towards the bottom, you’ll be drawing far more attention towards your feet that you likely want to, which can disrupt the ensemble. Rock and Republic, True Religion and Seven for All Mankind are just three labels that make jeans that fit nicely into the blazer and tee trend, although there are plenty of other options on the market to choose from as well.
