5 Tips Guaranteeing the Perfect Tie Knot
Tying a tie is quite easy. With a little bit of practice and a good tutorial any man can learn to tie a tie within a few minutes. But tying a perfect tie knot that will leave the tie aficionado envious is a different story. Below are 5 tips that will ensure that your necktie knot is tied to perfection.
- Have a Mirror: Tie your necktie in front of a mirror. It is much easier to see the whole length of the tie from a frontal rather than a Birdseye view.
- Clean Hands: Make sure you wash your hands before tying a tie. Also, make sure that your hands are manicured. This will insure that your tie stays clean and that no threads a pulled. Silk is a delicate fabric that needs special care. Nothing looks worse than a stained or damaged tie when dressing in suit and tie.
- Choosing The Right Knot: Yes, you read right. Choose the right knot! There are indeed several ways to tie a necktie. Choose a knot that complements the collar style. Narrow spread collars look great with knots like the Four in Hand or Half Windsor. Wide spread collars need a larger knot. Excellent here is the double Windsor knot.
- Right Tie Length: A tie must be tied to the right length. A tie that is tied too short or too long will look goofy. The proper length has the tip of your tie just hand below the belt buckle. This can be difficult if you are tall and/or have a large neck. For men whose height and collar size in inches (added together) exceeds 91 inches are better off wearing a longer length tie. Most designers will offer XL ties that are 3-4 inches longer than a standard tie.
- Dimpled Styling: Experts refer to it as a “dimped tie knot”. The dimple is a crevice that sits on top of the knot. It adds more volume to the knot and gives the tie a perfect drape. The dimple is made in the final step when tying your necktie. Before pulling tight give the necktie a fold (it should look like a “W”). Then pull tight!
